My name is Oikko and I am a transwoman. I am a Policy Champion of Youth for Policy, and this is my experience. Joining YfP as a participant in 2022’s Policy Camp was a transformative experience. As a member of the Hijra community in Bangladesh, I face unique challenges due to the traditional gender binary. Participating in a training program that was not specifically tailored for our community was a rarity. Despite initial concerns, my doubts quickly vanished as the YfP team fostered an inclusive and accepting environment, bridging gaps between diverse participants. Their sensitivity and meticulous approach ensured that Camp became a safe space for individuals of all identities. Throughout the camp, I received the same comprehensive training as my peers, delving into advocacy and policy processes. Sessions on self-identity, gender, and intersectionality broadened my understanding and helped me apply the knowledge practically. Upon returning from Camp, I shared what I learned with my community, engaging in discussions with senior members and exploring more effective ways to advocate for ourselves. As part of the “Equality and Social Justice for Hijra and Transgender Women Population” project, I actively contribute to advancing our rights and well-being. Leveraging the advocacy tools gained from Policy Camp, I recently met with a Member of Parliament to discuss public policy. In October 2022, I had the opportunity to attend IID’s Policy Breakfast on “Loss and Damage from Climate Change” after my participation in Policy Camp. At the event, I shed light on the challenges faced by transgender communities in Bangladesh due to climate change, stressing the importance of incorporating their vulnerability into global climate conversations. Inspired by this impactful experience, my goal is to raise awareness about climate change within the LGBTQIA+ community and continue advocating through YfP’s flagship programs. Overall, my journey with YfP has been empowering, allowing me to collaborate with like-minded individuals who are passionate about creating a better future. I am committed to continuing my work with YfP and spreading the knowledge gained through their programs, such as Policy CampX and Social Awareness Campaigns. By amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA+ individuals, I strive for a more inclusive and equitable society.
